Topic: BEWARE OF PRIDE
Read: 2 Chronicles 26:1-23
MEMORISE:
Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall_ (Proverbs 16:18)
Pride is inordinate self-esteem. It is a disdainful behaviour or treatment of others. In our Bible passage for today, King Uzziah did that which was right in the sight of the Lord. He kept up the pure worship of the true God as his fathers did; he was even better than his fathers, because he never worshipped idols. He became prosperous because he sought the Lord. He triumphed over the Philistines in war, demolished the fortification of the cities. His name was celebrated throughout all the neighbouring countries. But when he discovered he had become strong, powerful and successful, he intruded into the Priest's office farther than allowed, attempting to burn incense upon the altar of God, himself. Instead of lifting up the name of God in gratitude, his heart was lifted up to his destruction.
As Christians, at times, we think we have arrived, when we see God's favour and providence upon our lives and endeavours, and this makes our heads swell up. We must learn to be thankful to God for the achievements we have, and be cautious, so as not to fall because of the praises of people. Successful people should acknowledge the roles that God moves and helps others to play in their lives.King Uzziah's pride resulted in him becoming a leper till death, bringing shame upon him and his lineage.
Whoever you are, whatever you have, whichever position of authority you might have risen to, give glory to God both in words and actions. Don't allow pride to lead you into destruction (1 Corinthians 10:31).
