CHRIST : THE SON OF DAVID IN 1 & 2 SAMUEL:
And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build an house for my name, and I will stablish the throne of his kingdom forever. (2 Samuel 7:12,13).
Obviously, this prophesy in our text concerning this son of David has dual interpretation and application. On the one hand, it applies to Solomon, the biological son of David. On the other hand, it applies to Jesus Christ, the prophetic Son of David. Of course, it is clear by the fact that the prophesy pointed out that His, will be an everlasting kingdom. That was not the case with Solomon whose kingdom had a duration period.
Friends, it is this prophetic Son, whose ancestry would be traced to David, a man after God’s heart, our Lord Jesus Christ, that we want to look at today, as we continue with our search for him in the bible. Three things we are looking at. They are:
1. THE PROPHESY CONCERNING JESUS AS THE SON OF DAVID:
And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots (Isaiah 11:1).
If there is anything that lends an indubitable and incontrovertible credence and credibility to the Divinity and Lordship of Christ it is the precision with which prophesies concerning him where fulfilled. Here we have one of such prophesies concerning his relationship with David in the days of Isaiah. The Prophet identified Him as the root of Jesse who happen to be the father of David. He has been in existence before the beginning of Jesse's dynasty. Now, what do we make out of that fact? Well, it reinforces the fact that Christ was not an ordinary man. Therefore, we should worship and reverence Him in all that we do in this life. And that worship begin with our surrendering our lives to Him as unto a Faithful Creator.
2. THE POWER CONFIRMING JESUS AS THE SON OF DAVID:
Then was brought unto him one possessed with a devil, blind, and dumb: and he healed him, insomuch that the blind and dumb both spake and saw. And all the people were amazed, and said, Is not this the son of David? (Matt.12:22, 23).
Much more than David, Christ Jesus performed miracles that demonstrated the fullness of God’s power upon His life. In fact, the scripture reveals to us that in Him dwelleth all the power of the Almighty and Everlasting God. All that He did during His earthly ministry, such as saving the sinners, healing the sick, casting out devils and even raising the dead where all done in order to confirm that Jesus is that prophetic son of David, the man after God’s heart.
3. THE PLEA COMING FROM JESUS THE SON OF DAVID:
I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star. And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely. (Rev.22:16,17).
As a matter of fact, the Lord has been pleading with men to come unto Him since time immemorial. And this invitation, he extends to all and sundry today. Come unto me, he says, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. (Matt.11:28-30).
Wouldn’t you accept this invitation today? May God grant you the grace to do so in Jesus name.
